My Attempt At Explaining the Gospel

In the Jesus & the Gospel convo, one of the action options is to explain the Gospel in your own words. This is my attempt. I was thinking of someone specific when I wrote these words. I said it out loud several times, and I made adjustments so it’s more like how I talk.

I hope this can inspire you to come up with your own way to talk about the Gospel as you have opportunity.

My Attempt

What is the Gospel? The Gospel is God’s solution for the human predicament.

Of all the creatures on earth, only we humans were created by God to be immortal, like little reflections of God. We’re created for a loving relationship with God forever.

But, we wanted to live as gods of our own lives. Rejecting God as God, we believed a lie. All humans reject God in one way or another. The Bible calls this sin.

But God is holy—there’s no darkness, or lies, or evil in Him. So His holiness can’t tolerate sin in his presence. So our sin and rebellion made it so we can’t enter immortal life in God’s presence, so we’re destined to die.

But God is not only holy, He’s also loving and kind. He saw that we were trapped in our sin and rebellion. Our minds and hearts are trapped in this Big Lie that says we can be our own gods. So He did for us what we couldn’t do for ourselves.

Around 4 BC, God sent His own Son to earth to live as one of us, as a man named Jesus, from Nazareth, which is in current day Palestine.

Jesus lived a perfect life of honoring God. He spent His life teaching people about God, calling them to turn away from sin and back to God. He healed people, he delivered people from evil spirits, and he also did some miracles to prove that God had sent him.

Jesus then died unjustly. He was executed, under false charges, on a wooden cross, which was capital punishment in Roman times. Jesus willingly suffered and gave his own life for ours, and that cleansed us from our sin in God’s eyes. Jesus died in our place, so we could be reconciled to God.

Then, Jesus was raised from the dead. He overcame death once and for all, and this opened the way for us to receive immortal life again.

Jesus spoke to hundreds of people after he was raised from the dead, proving that he was alive, and then he returned to God. He’s now in that immortal realm with God again, preparing a place for us.

In the meantime, God sent the Holy Spirit into our hearts to always be with us, to encourage us, and help us understand what Jesus taught.

There’s hope for anybody who trusts that God is God (and we are not), believes Jesus’ message, and follows Jesus. We have a path to thriving in a loving relationship with God through the Holy Spirit. And after we die, we’ll be raised to live a life of dignity and joy with God forever.

So Jesus restored our relationship with God, our loving Creator. And, Jesus recovered our immortal nature. Jesus was the first human to be raised to immortal life after death. And all followers of Jesus will be raised to immortal life after we die.

God did all this through Jesus and the Holy Spirit, showing both His holiness and the depth of his love for people. And that’s why it’s called the Gospel, which means “the good news.”
